Our Duck Species
A glimpse into the fascinating world of ducks
Peckin Duck
- Origin: Originally from China, now the most popular meat duck worldwide.
- Appearance: Pure white feathers, bright orange bill and legs. Large, plump body.
- Temperament: Docile, friendly, and easily adaptable to different environments.
- Productivity: Excellent meat production, reaching maturity quickly (7-8 weeks). Lays a moderate amount of white eggs.
- Special Notes: Flightless due to their heavy build, making them ideal for enclosed rearing
Muscovy Ducks
- Origin: South and Central America.
- Appearance: Large, heavy-bodied duck with distinctive red caruncles (fleshy growths) around the eyes and bill. Various colors.
- Temperament: Independent, less social than other ducks. Males can be territorial.
- Productivity: Good meat producers with a distinct flavor. Average egg layers.
- Special Notes: Not closely related to other domestic ducks. Their quacks are softer, more like a hiss.
Cayuga Ducks
- Origin: Developed in the United States from wild black ducks.
- Appearance: Stunning iridescent black plumage with a green sheen in sunlight. Dark bill and legs.
- Temperament: Active, curious, and good foragers.
- Productivity: Decent egg layers of black or dark green eggs. Meat has a richer flavor than Pekin.
- Special Notes: Primarily kept as ornamental ducks due to their beauty but can be raised for meat and eggs.
Indian Runner Ducks
- Origin: Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia.
- Appearance: Unique upright posture (like a bowling pin). Variety of colors (white, fawn, black, etc.).
- Temperament: Energetic, active, and excellent foragers.
- Productivity: Prolific egg layers of white or tinted eggs.
- Special Notes: Known for their comical running gait. Not primarily raised for meat due to their slender build.
Rouen Ducks
- Origin: France.
- Appearance: Resembles the Mallard in coloration, but larger and heavier.
- Temperament: Calm, gentle, and good foragers.
- Productivity: Good meat producers with a rich flavor. Average egg layers.
